Tamil Nadu chief minister and AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa on Thursday slammed the UPA government for raising the price of LPG cylinders steeply and demanded its immediate roll back.
In a hard hitting statement condemning the hike, Jayalalithaa said that the first day of 2014 brought bad news for the people.
"Considering the hardship faced by the people and their feelings, the hike in the prices of non-subsidised gas cylinder should be revoked or there should be an increase in the supply of subsidised cooking gas cylinders to 24 per year," said Jayalalithaa.
Jayalalithaa, who wants a stronger hold in Tamil Nadu and is looking to emerge as a key player after the 2014 general elections at the national level, said that the LPG cylinder price rise has placed a huge burden on the common man.
The chief minister said that fixing LPG prices on the basis of international prices was simply not acceptable.
In September last year, LPG cylinder was priced at Rs. 780 and now it costs Rs. 1,234 per cylinder.
