The Janata Dal (United) has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of involvement in a scam of purchasing pieces of lands in Bihar by cash at rates below the circle, which is a criminal offence.

Some media reports suggested that the BJP bought acres and acres of land in Bihar till the first week of November, just before Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced scrapping of Rs 1000 and Rs 500 notes on November 8.

On Saturday, BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi claimed that his party sends every detail of its spending to the income tax authorities and any purchase of land is made through cheques or RTGS and there is no involvement of cash.

JD(U) leader Rajiv Ranjan questioned the desperation shown by the saffron party in advance of the demonetisation announcement. “Yesterday, Sushil Modi said that all transactions were done through the RTGS, but the evidences we presented, clearly state that there were cash transactions also and the BJP has bought lands below the circle rate which is a crime,” he said.

“This is a big scam. In the past two months, the way BJP has purchased land we just want to ask why they were so desperate two months prior to the demonetisation announcement,” he added.

Defending the party, Sushil Kumar Modi said, “BJP provides every details of its spending to the income tax; any purchase of land is through cheque/RTGS, not cash.”

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on the other end has called for a probe into the alleged scandal, saying only a joint parliamentary committee (JPC) probe could bring forth the truth.

CPI(M) leader Ritabrata Banerjee told ANI, “It (scam) cannot be proved without a JPC and only that can throw light on what actually happened. Definitely the BJP ministers had information (of the demonetisation move).”

“Information has come from Bihar that BJP people have bought land there (just before demonetisation). We are sure more such information will come. And that is why we are demanding a JPC probe in the Parliament,” he added.
