A sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) in Jharkhand has courted controversy after reportedly washing Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad’s feet.

Jharkhand director general of police (DGP) Rajeev Kumar on Wednesday ordered a probe into the incident.

After spending more than two months in prison following his conviction in a fodder scam case, Lalu got bail from the Supreme Court on Friday. He walked out of Birsa Munda Central Jail in Ranchi on Monday and travelled to neighbouring Bihar by road.

On the way to Patna, Lalu made a stopover at Rajrappa Temple, a shrine in Jharkhand’s Ramgarh district.

Ramgarh SDPO Ashok Kumar, deputed at the site for Lalu’s security, washed the former Bihar chief minister’s feet before he entered the temple. An SDPO is of the rank of a deputy superintendent of police.

What's more, a junior police official was apparently seen holding Lalu’s slippers.

“I have directed the Ramgarh superintendent police (SP) to submit a report. Action will be taken against the two police officials based on the report,” the Jharkhand DGP said.

The SDPO said Lalu and his father were friends and helping an elderly person at a religious place was a noble gesture.

“We have family relations. I was washing my feet when Laluji reached there and asked for water. I gave him water,” the SDPO said.

Ramgarh deputy commissioner SK Singh said, “I have no information about the incident. It is a matter of the police department.”

RK Prasad, the Ramgarh SP, refused to comment on the matter.
