The Anti-Corruption Bureau has arrested Jodhpur Municipal Corporation commissioner Ram Kishore Maheshwari and two of his staffers on charges of taking a bribe of Rs 35,000 from a man for clearing a file.
Acting deputy inspector general of police (ACB) Narpat Singh said the complainant, Gopal Kishan Bhati, had applied for change in the rights of a property several months ago.
After making many rounds of the JMC, Bati had recently called Maheshwari who advised him to contact Jitendra Sharma and Mohammed Sajid, both employees at the corporation.
The duo asked him to bring the bribe money near a confectionary shop in Paota area on Friday evening. But suspecting the notes might have been dusted with a powder that would give them away, they asked Bati to put the money in the box of a motorcycle they were riding.
Since Bati had filed a complaint with the ACB, the anti-corruption sleuths waiting nearby caught hold of Sharma and Sajid and asked them to call Maheshwari.
"They talked with Maheshwari in code words and informed him that the party from Gujarat has arrived. The commissioner called them to his private residence," Singh said.
Soon after Bati handed over the money to him, Maheshwari was caught by the ACB team.
The ACB officials seized documents showing investments in land and buildings, some jewelry and several official files from Maheshwari's resident.
All the accused have been remanded in judicial custody by an ACB court.
