The chief medical superintendent (CMS) of Kanpur district was suspended on Tuesday following the death of a 12-year-old boy, who died on his father’s shoulder as he was denied admission to the city’s biggest hospital.

The chief minister’s office also sought a detailed report from the district magistrate (DM), Kanpur, into Ansh’s death at the Lala Lajpat Rai hospital.

The suspension of Dr RC Gupta came after the authorities shared the preliminary findings with the CM’s office in Lucknow.

A government spokesperson said the CM suspended him with immediate effect. “CM has said the government was committed to provide best medical facilities to the people. The insensitive doctors will be dealt with iron hands for their slackness in their duty,” he said.

On Monday, the hospital’s emergency section refused to admit Sunil Kumar’s son, Ansh, neither did the staff provide the father with any assistance to carry the boy to a children’s medical centre where he was suggested to go.

The boy died on his father’s shoulder when he was dashing on foot to the children’s hospital, 250 metres away.
