An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of the Karnal police was arrested on Thursday on a charge of outraging the modesty of a woman.
A press release issued by the superintendent of police office said that accused Devender Singh was dismissed from the service with immediate effect.
He was posted at the Police Lines here.
The ASI was allegedly drunk when he harassed the 30-year-old married woman sexually.
The victim, who is a resident of the city, alleged that she was victimised by the accused at the local bus stand on Wednesday night.
“I was returning from Delhi with my husband and the accused, who was not in his uniform, blocked my way while stepping down from a Haryana roadways bus. When I resisted, he outraged my modesty in public. He also misbehaved with my husband,” she told mediapersons.
The victim also alleged that her repeated attempts to contact the much-publicised woman police telephone helpline did not evoke any reaction. She allegedly slapped the ASI.
Her husband said that the co-passengers and roadways staff helped them overpower the “unruly” accused and took him to the police post at bus stand where he was booked under sections 354 (outraging modesty) and 510 (misconduct in public by a drunken person) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Sources said the accused ASI had been suspended earlier as well for picking a fight with an autorickshaw and was reinstated a few days ago.
“His medical examination confirmed that he was in an inebriated condition at the time of crime. The ASI was even produced in front of SP Shashank Anand, where he confessed to having consumed liquor,” said an official who did not wish to be named.
Meanwhile, the accused was produced in a court and was sent to 14-day judicial remand.
