DMK chief MK Karunanidhi on Tuesday took former Supreme Court judge and Press Council chairman Markandey Katju head on, questioning the timing of his allegations and asked why he was silent all those years when the UPA was in power.

In a letter to party cadres, released to the media on Tuesday, Karunanidhi asked if Karju’s allegations were influenced by “some hidden pressure”.

“In the event of what he said about the High Court judge being true, why was he quiet all these years?” Karunanidhi questioned and wondered whether it was to get benefits.

Charging Katju with attempt to curry favour with the new dispensation, Karunanidhi said the timing of his allegations and his praise for Tamil Nadu CM Jayalalithaa was all motivated. The issue Karunanidhi said, came at a time when orders on a case on Jayalalithaa’s assets in a Bangalore court were nearing final stages.

Karunanidhi also asked if Katju’s allegations of corruption in the judiciary were being made at someone’s behest.

Karunanidhi took objection to the allegations against the DMK. He has made some “unwarranted comments against the DMK without naming the party. This makes it necessary for us to dig into Katju’s history, he said.

“Why did he not raise the issue of additional judge of the Madras High Court when he was the chief justice of the Madras High Court or when he was a Supreme Court judge,” Karunanidhi questioned.

Karunanidhi said Katju has had made several remarks that he was forced to withdraw later, like his comment that 90% of Indians are fools.
