Police officials had earlier traced his location to Punjab but were unable to track him further. The family has now contacted the investigating officer of the case, claiming that Bashid is locked up in a Pakistani prison.

“We received a letter from a person in Bashid’s handwriting in which he has given our address. This person is also from our district and had been locked in a prison in Pakistan for nearly six years before being released recently. He said he got to know Bashid in the prison and the two got to talking when they realised that they are from the same district,” said Naseerul Hasan, the boy’s father, a personnel with J&K police.

Hasan said Bashid had left after a slight disagreement with family over his poor academic performance. “He was arrested by Pak authorities after his visa was expired and it was only now that he was able to reach us,” the father said. However, Naseerul could not explain how his son got a visa for Pakistan and how he reached there.

Police are probing the claims. “We are working to ascertain the family’s allegation. Accordingly, due legal action will be taken,” said senior superintendent of police, Vaibhav Krishna.

The investigating officer of the case, Gurwinder Singh, said he had taken details of the person who delivered the letter to the family. “I will contact him to verify claims. Also, we are working on identifying the reasons he went to Pakistan for ,” Singh said.
