If the strength of the crowd was taken into account, Kejriwal’s rally was quite a success because none of the rallyists, who came from all over the country, had any sponsored vehicles or trains.
The crowd, according to cops on duty, was not less than 8,000. There were largely youth, but included many elderly persons and some women, too, including the Gulabi Gang members. There was a large group of exservicemen (both officers and other ranks) and farmers.
Though the administration had banned lathis (indicating towards Bharatiya Kisan Union workers who have sided with IAC), the BKU district president Arvind Shakya said that lathis were part of the workers’ ‘dress code’.
Addressing the gathering, Kejriwal asked Farrukhabad voters: “Tell me had you known that Khurshid would say that he would even lay his life for Sonia Gandhi (the Congress president) instead of laying it for the country, would you have voted for him.” The crowd shouted a big ‘No’.
The rally was named ‘Chalo Farrukhabad’ and the theme was ‘Farrukhabad Kiska (who does Farrukhabad belong to?).
Kejriwas went on: “So tell me Farrukhabad belongs to whom, yours or Khurshid’s. You are the masters and you elected him to be a servant. But look, the servant instead of serving the masters, is fleecing and cheating them. And on top of it he is showing such an attitude and ego to us. Just the way you made his wife Louise lose her deposit in the last assembly elections, reduce him to the same status.”
People were carrying tricolours all over the venue and a giant double-bedsheet sized tricolour fluttered across the venue all through the event.
If the speeches of Kejriwal and his team members like Sisodia, Sanjay Singh, Kumar Vishwas and Gopal Rai sounded passionate and patriotic, then it also badly mocked at the politicians and political parties and sent people laughing and cheering every now and then.
The speakers termed all political parties the same “helping each other secretly.”
“We have two objectives -one to expose the corrupt and make people aware, and second, make people come out of their fear against such people,” said Kejriwal.
Almost half of the crowd ‘Main hoon aam admi’ caps and many carried anti-Salman Khurshid slogans and caricatures of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
The event began with ‘Vande Matram’ and concluded with ‘Jana Gana Mana Adhinayak Jai Hey’.
