A Communist Party of India legislator in Kerala is in trouble with her party after photographs of her daughter’s wedding showed the bride covered in gold jewellery triggered criticism.

MLA Gita Gopi’s daughter’s wedding drew allegations of hypocrisy against the CPI, which has backed the Left government’s austerity measures.

A CPI leader, Mullakara Ratnakaran, had during the last assembly session urged the chief minister to find a way to stop extravagant weddings, such as the one organised by Gopi.

“One might think she is the daughter of a rich trader or a millionaire. However she is the daughter of a CPI legislator. We can only be shocked,” activist and political commentator KM Shahjehan wrote on social media.

He was referring to photos of Gopi’s daughter, who is seen wearing glittering bangles almost up to the elbow on both hands and with several heavy necklaces around her neck.

“Look, Communists have outweighed business magnates in gold,” said another activist while debating the gala wedding on social media.

The marriage was held in Sree Krishna temple in Guruvayoor on Sunday and many ministers and legislators attended it.

Gopi is a two-time MLA.

“Which mother wouldn’t do this for her daughter? I did only my duty as the mother,” Gopi said as the issue gathered traction.

She said she purchased 50 sovereigns for the wedding and the rest were gifted by her relatives and friends.

However her political opponents pointed to her 2016 assembly election affidavit in which she had declared total assets of Rs 58 lakh.

“There are certain norms for party workers and leaders on such occasions and the MLA should have been cautious on this. We have asked the party’s Thirssur district committee to conduct an inquiry,” a senior party leader said admitting that the wedding invited enough embarrassment to the party.
