A 34-year-old Kerala-based travel agent, Ameer Tawaha, was held by Chennai Airport police after he was found taking pictures of Union finance minister P Chidamb-aram on Tuesday evening.

The minister was walking towards the departure lounge of the Chennai airport to catch a Delhi flight when the incident occurred.

When questioned, Tawaha revealed that he was planning to go to Dubai via Delhi by separate flights on Wednesday morning. Police officials said he showed them first-class tickets for his journey. “When asked why he chose a roundabout route via Delhi to go to Dubai, he fumbled for answers. This raised our suspicions,” an official said.

Though Tawaha did not present an immediate security threat to Chidambaram, his travel plan, suspicious behaviour in the past, and his act of taking pictures of the Union finance minister made the police decide on a detailed investigation.

“If need be, we may even detain Tawaha,” the police official said.

On October 3, Tawaha and 19-year-old PM Mansoor, a student of Al Ameen College in Ernakulam, were questioned by the police for nearly 20 hours before being let off. Even then, they had alighted from a Dreamliner flight.

Police have registered a case against Tawaha on charges of taking photographs of the former home minister under Cr. No 383/2012 u/s 341,353 of the Indian Penal Code.
