Land set to be acquired for a proposed BSF camp have united ruling Left Front partners CPI(M) and RSP besides the Opposition Trinamool and Congress to resist the move at Mahabari in South Dinajpur district.

The parties have formed a ‘Krishi Jomi Raksha Committee’ (Save Agricultural Land Committee) to oppose the acquisition of 300 bighas for the proposed camp, CPI(M) district secretariat member Goutam Goswami said on Monday.

“If the land was to be acquired for industry then we would have considered it. But since the district has no industry and people have to rely mostly on agriculture, not an inch of land will be given up for the BSF camp. Also, the land at Mahabari in Bansihari block is a multiple crop yielding one,” he said.

Trinamool Congress district chief Biplab Mitra said the authorities should have learnt lessons from the Singur and Nandigram movements. “If the authorities have not done so, they will never learn.”

Letters have been sent to governor MK Naryanan, CM Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, land and land revenue minister Rezzak Mollah and Leader of the Opposition Partha Chatterjee after a mass signature campaign, CPI(M) member said.
