The ruling Left Front in West Bengal yesterday appealed to all MPs from the state to oppose in Parliament the way the Bhopal Gas Tragedy case was handled and expose the Union Carbide.
"In the interest of all, we urge all elected members in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha to oppose the way
case was dealt with and expose the Union Carbide," Left Front chairman Biman Bose told a press conference in Kolkata.
He said CBI findings in the case were not taken seriously and the then chairman of Union Carbide Warren Anderson was let off scot free. Bose said former Union Carbide India Chairman Keshub Mahindra and seven others got away with light sentence because of the manner in which the case was handled by the government. He said stricter punishment could have been given in such a serious case, but the matter was not taken up properly.
Left MPs would also oppose the Civil Nuclear Liability Bill and, without naming the Trinamool Congress, he urged its MPs to take a stand against it. "We are appealing to them in the interest of 'ma-mati-manush' to oppose the Bill," he said in an obvious reference to Trinamool Congress MPs.
"It should be opposed by all LF members in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, besides all elected members from West Bengal," Bose said. The Left would also take up programmes against price rise and to strengthen food security. The PDS system should also be strengthened to prevent surplus foodgrains from going waste, he added.
