The Bill to turn the 192-year old Presidency College of Kolkata into a university has been tabled in the West Bengal Assembly on Tuesday. However, the Bill has been referred to the Standing Committee on higher education. “It would be tabled in the budget session in February 2010
for discussion and enactment,” said higher education minister Sudarshan .Roychaudhuri.

“Once Presidency College is upgraded into a university the teachers and the non teaching staffs of Presidency would be given a choice to stay with the university or for a transfer to any other government college,” said Roychaudhuri.

The college currently has about 150 teachers.

The Bill mentions once Presidency College turns into a university it would have to expand its campus.

The state government is likely to allot land in and around Kolkata.
