Chaos descended on Kolkata as Trinamool Congress supporters blocked the city’s arterial streets for two hours between 5 and 7 pm on Friday.

It started with a three-hour siege in front of Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee’s chamber, in the Writer’s Building, by Leader of Opposition Partha Chatterjee, 55, and three other Trinamool MLAs.

Chatterjee and the MLAs were arrested around 4:20 pm. The Trinamool then called for the blockade of the city’s streets.
The party was demanding the arrest of the chief minister and state home secretary Ardhendu Sen.

The Trinamool said their demand for the CM’s arrest was triggered by provocative statements made by Anil Bose, the CPI(M) member of Lok Sabha.

Bose on Thursday had given the Hooghly police super a 30-minute deadline to arrest two Trinamool supporters.  The supporters were then arrested.

“If the police can act on a directive of a former MP, why can’t they arrest the main culprit... Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee...” said Chatterjee.
