The Alipore jail premises have been tense since Friday as one of the inmates went missing after serving parole.
The family of the missing inmate has alleged foul play and jail authorities have shifted the accused, another inmate of the same prison, to a high security cell.
Tapas Maji alias Byanka Maji, a resident of Kalna in Burdwan and Prakash Dhara, a resident of Shyamnagar in the North 24-Parganas were released on parole on October 31.
Dhara, a former policeman convicted of rape, has already served five years in prison. Maji’s father Gopeshwar is also lodged in the same jail.
Jail sources said Dhara befriended Maji while in jail and after being released on parole, both went to stay at the latter’s place in Kalna.
But on Friday, while Dhara returned to prison, Maji was surprisingly absent.
As the word on Maji got around, an air of tension gripped the jail premises.
That Dhara refused to visit his own family after being released on parole and instead chose to stay over at Maji’s place further raised suspicion among a section of inmates.
“The situation is very tense inside the jail. It is a very sensitive matter. We fear clashes breaking out inside the jail anytime and a section of inmates might target Dhara. Hence, we have shifted him to a high-security cell,” a senior jail official said.
Maji’s family members have even lodged a complaint at Kalna police station.
On Friday, Dhara was made to wait for more than five hours outside his cell, as authorities feared violence might break out anytime over Maji’s disappearance.
Senior police officials of the jail department, Alipore police station and Lalbazar have been repeatedly visiting the jail to maintain law and order and interrogate Dhara.
But even 24 hours later, police could not land a breakthrough with regard to Maji’s whereabouts.
Alipore jail authorities have increased patrolling inside the jail premises and shifted Dhara to the highsecurity cell number 3.
Earlier, Alipore jail authorities stirred controversy after releasing hardened convicts accused in the Khadim kidnapping case on parole.
Jail authorities had to later plead with the convicts to return.
