A day after the 22-yr-old SFI leader, Sudipta Gupta, died, the Trinamool government insisted that his death was an accident, despite claims of forensic experts of SSKM Hospital that Gupta had suffered two severe head injuries and a blow to the jaw.

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, who paid a brief visit to SSKM Hospital, where Gupta had succumbed to his injuries, said on Wednesday afternoon: “This is an unfortunate incident. The boy accidentally dashed his head against a lamp post.”

She left the hospital without meeting Gupta’s relatives and dodged a demand for a judicial probe.

On Tuesday, SFI cadres had gathered at north Kolkata’s College Square to demand holding of college union elections in the state.

When the protest took a violent turn, police arrested some SFI supporters and Gupta was one of them.

According to police, Gupta, hit his head against a lamp post during the scuffle, but Opposition CPI(M), whose student wing is the SFI, cried foul and alleged a police hand in the youth’s death.

The version of the forensic experts corroborates the description offered by the other SFI activists who were in the same bus as Gupta and had witnessed the incident.

The autopsy at the hospital was video-recorded to make the process “more transparent”. The report will be submitted within the next 48 hours.

The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) directed the police commissioner to conduct an enquiry by an officer not below the rank of additional commissioner. The SHRC will also conduct its own probe.

Till Wednesday evening, all that the police did was arrest the driver of the private bus that was ferrying the arrested SFI activists on charges of rash driving. He was later let off on bail.

As thousands descended on the streets of Kolkata to bid farewell to the dead youth, whose body was taken to the SFI head office, the Mamata bashing continued.

“In the case of Park Street rape too the CM had said the crime was framed,” said Pradip Bhattacharya, president of the state Congress.

While CPI(M) state secretary and politburo member Biman Bose said, “What will be the enquiry if she (Banerjee) makes advance comments?”
