Mamata Banerjee’s men at the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) in association with her government’s horticulture department will set up fair-price vegetable shops at 18 of its markets in Kolkata.

“We are planning to start fair price vegetable shops in 18 of our prominently located markets from Thursday. If space is available one market will have more than one such shop/counter,” Tarak Singh, member, mayor- in- council ( market), said after a highlevel meeting with officials from state horticulture department on Tuesday.

Farmers’ cooperative formed by the state horticulture department will directly sell vegetables from these fair price shops in Kolkata markets. KMC’s market department will keep an eye on the prices of vegetables being sold from these counters.

The state government provided over 100 air-conditioned vehicles to these farmers’ cooperatives in seven districts: North and South 24-Parganas, Nadia, Howrah, Hooghly, Murshidabad and East Midnapore.

Farmers’ cooperatives from North 24-Parganas will supply vegetables in five such air-conditioned vehicles to markets in North Kolkata and those from South 24-Parganas will supply vegetables in six such air-conditioned vehicles to markets in South Kolkata.

Gariahat, Ultadanga, Kankurgachi, Marcus Square, Park Circus, Lansdowne, Lake Mall, Santoshpur, New Alipore, Shakherbazar, SN Roy etc markets are included under the list of 18 municipal markets where these fair price vegetable shops will be set up.

“The state government would provide 50% subsidy to the carrying cost of vegetables in these 100 vehicles to the farmers’ cooperatives and thus it is expected that without middlemen and with government subsidy the prices of vegetables would be quiet low to the cur rent market price,” Singh said.
