Five more infants died on Sunday in Malda district of West Bengal due to asphyxia and malnutrition taking the death toll to 12.

The hospital in Malda, which provides healthcare services to the province and other nearby areas, witnessed surge in crib deaths. The government hospital had been in the news for the death of 23 infants due to an unspecified illness in June.

According to a doctor, seven infants had lost their lives on Saturday July 12, all below the age of one.

The infants were mainly admitted from Manikchok, Kaliachok and Ratua blocks under the district.

“My child died, early morning at 4 am. He was five months old,” said mother of an infant, Lipi Malik.

On Saturday, medical superintendent Jotish Kumar Sarkar had informed that the primary cause behind the deaths was low weight and respiratory problems.

According to an unofficial source, more than 32 infants had died with these problems within this year in the hospital.
