The 10-year-old girl who was made to lick her urine by a warden of Visva-Bharati (VB) hostel has decided not to go back to the school again.

"I won’t go back to the hostel. The same thing may happen with me again. I would study in some other school. I have also spoken about this to my parents. They have agreed that I would never go back to the school,” said the girl to a television channel in front of her parents who nodded in approval.

“It is too much of a humiliation to lick urine in front of my friends. I just cannot go back there," said the girl.

Ironically, the school where she was studying was set up by none other than Rabindranath Tagore in 1901 to set up an enlightened model of teaching in the country.

Sushanta Duttagupta, the vice-chancellor of Visva-Bharati University, tried to defend the warden's act by saying she was using a traditional method of curing bedweting by children.

On Saturday, warden Uma Poddar made the girl lick her bedsheet after sprinkling salt on it in an effort to cure bedwetting by the child.

On Monday the police arrested the parents of the child on charges of jeopardising the security of the hostel though the parents went to fetch their daughter after submiting a written undertaking. After they were produced to Bolpur court, both the police and Visva-Bharati authorities earned severe reprimand of the judge.

On Tuesday morning the girl reiterated she was made to lick the bedsheet and contradicted the VC's Monday claim that she was merely asked to lick it and not finally forced to do the act.

“I did lick the bedsheet after salt was sprinkled on it. How can the VC claim I was not made to lick it when he was not present at the scene," said the child.
