Rising incidence of rape and crimes against women are directly linked to the increase in population as well the tendency of the youth to adopt modern views, according to West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee.

“The population is increasing and it is not the same in West Bengal as it was during the time of Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy (the state’s second chief minister),” she said during the debate in the assembly on governor MK Narayanan’s opening address at the ongoing budget session.

“Cars are increasing. Shopping malls are increasing. Multiplexes are increasing. Our young people are becoming modern. And you are saying that rapes are increasing,” the chief minister added.

Amid a host of sharp questions from CPI(M) leader Dr Suryakanta Mishra, she lost her cool. Snapping at the leader of the opposition, she said: “Don’t advise me and remain silent for 10 years.”

The West Bengal chief minister said the number of rapes in other major metros was much higher than in Kolkata. “But, I feel there should not be a single incident of rape,” the Trinamool chief added.

She blamed a section of the media for deliberately playing up the issue of rapes.

Later, both Mishra and Congress legislator Manas Bhunia slammed the CM for her comments on rape, saying her theories were inconceivable.
