Trinamool Congress supporters attacked and set ablaze the houses of seven BJP supporters in Arambagh of Hooghly district in West Bengal on Sunday night, marking yet another incident in the series of clashes between the ruling party and the BJP. Several people were injured in the clashes.

Two fire tenders were rushed in to douse the flames; however, the houses were gutted. A rapid action force was also deployed to the village. According to locals, the assailants allegedly threatened more attacks if the people continued supporting the BJP.

“A good number of locals from Krishnapur village had joined the BJP about a month and a half ago. This is why Trinamool men attacked them,” Swapan Pal, a Hooghly district leader of the BJP, said.

The police, however, said that the clash was a result of a conflict over the control of lifting sand from the Mundeswari river. Hooghly SP Sunil Chowdhury said that one BJP worker was arrested in this connection.

Over the past few months Bengal has witnessed many between the two parties, especially in South 24 Parganas, North 24 Parganas and Birbhum districts.

This time, it is not yet clear whether any central team would visit Krishnapur. A team from the BJP state leadership is likely to visit the village on Tuesday.

The TMC, however, has denied the charges.

“The allegations are baseless. Everything started from the time the local sand mafia, Jainal Abedin, backed by the BJP, returned to the village,” Trinamool Hooghly district president Tapan Dasgupta said.

For many reasons, Abedin has not been in his village. TMC leaders have alleged that he took ‘political security’ from the BJP.
