Ten people, including a bookie, were arrested by a special team of the Kolkata Police on Wednesday night for being allegedly involved in a cricket betting racket.

“We have arrested 10 people including a bookie last night. We are investigating the case. They will be produced before a court today (Thursday),” deputy commissioner (detective department special) Santosh Pandey informed.

Initial investigations said they had bet on a match between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super kings.

About Rs. 3 lakh and some laptops were recovered from them, the police said.

The bookie has been identified as Ajit Surekha, who had produced a Bengali film called Phirey Esho Tumi in June 2012.

Pandey said Surekha had a history of betting on horse races but whether he was involved in cricket betting needed to be looked into.

However, police sources said Surekha was one of the prominent bookies with direct contacts with Mumbai.

Police officers say after Sreesanth’s arrest, most of the top bookies have fled West Bengal.

When asked whether they were betting on the upcoming semi-final and final T20 League matches in Kolkata, Pandey said, “Right now we are in the initial stage of investigations. We are looking at all aspects.”
