Gagandeep Singh, 20, a student of a private engineering college, allegedly raped his classmate, a Dalit girl, and also filmed the crime on Friday.

Though the local police arrested him on the charges of rape and crime against woman on Saturday, they did not book him under the Information Technology (IT) Act for allegedly making an MMS of the crime.

The police said the girl was returning home from tuition when Gagandeep intercepted her near Sector 4 and forcibly bundled her in his car in which he committed the crime.

When asked about not invoking the IT Act in the case, deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Nirmal Singh told Hindustan Times on Sunday that the police had checked Gagandeep's mobile phone but no obscene video was found.

"The girl has alleged that the suspect has threatened to post the MMS on the internet if she told anyone about the incident," he said.

The suspect has reportedly told the police that he had only threatened the girl, but did not make any such video.

When asked if the officials, who had checked the suspect's mobile phone, had an expertise to ensure that the alleged content was not deleted, the DSP said if the victim and her family insisted, the phone could be sent for forensic examination.

The suspect will be produced in the court on Monday.
