Bharat Ratna awardee and singer Lata Mangeshkar has congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Bharatiya Janta Party and party president Amit Shah on their ‘great victory’ in the state assembly elections on Saturday.
The 87-year-old legend sent out a tweet saying “Namaskar.Aadarniya @narendramodi ji , @AmitShah ji aur BJP ke sabhi karyakartao’n ko is shaandaar jeet ki bahut badhaai. (A big congratulations on their great victory to respected Narendra Modi ji, Amit Shah ji and all BJP workers.)”
The BJP is currently leading in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, two of the five states where the election results are being declared on Saturday, March 11. Votes are also being counted to elect new assemblies in Punjab, Goa and Manipur.
The biggest surprise was from the battleground state of Uttar Pradesh, where counting trends signalled ringing endorsement for Modi’s stewardship of the economy, especially the controversial decision to scrap 500-and 1000-rupee banknotes.
Trends showed the party leading in 303 of the state’s 403 seats, leaving the Samajwadi Party-Congress alliance way behind at 71 seats. The Bahujan Samaj Party, once a dominant power, faced decimation.
