Police used water cannons and canes to evict the protesters from near the house of Surjewala. Trade union leaders and workers have condemned Sunday’s incident and called for a greater stir. “We will go all-out to protest this cruel step by the government,” said Satbir Singh, president, Citu, Haryana.

The workers have been holding a peaceful dharna at the mini-secretariat in Kaithal since March 24 demanding the release of 147 workers, who are in jail for the labor violence in July 2012 at the Manesar plant that led to the killing of a senior HR manager of the company.
