The Haryana police on Saturday arrested three men accused of gang-raping a first-year law student at the Bhagat Phool Singh Women's University near Sonepat, three days after the incident took place.

The 19-year-old girl, who hails from New Delhi, has alleged that Amit Malik, who runs a mess on the university campus, and three others dragged her into an SUV on Wednesday morning when she had stepped out to buy a notebook.

They then took her to the nearby fields where she was gang-raped. Later, they dumped her near the university gate.

On Saturday, Malik and his aides, Jaipal and Bhupinder, were produced in a court and remanded to five-day police custody. The fourth accused, Vikas, is absconding, the police said.

The incident has sparked a furore in the university. Around 2,000 students have been blocking the Sonepat-Gohana highway since the incident came to light on Thursday.

They are demanding the arrest of hostel warden Sahib Kaur, who allegedly said such incidents were “common”. They have also called for the removal of vice-chancellor Pankaj Mittal.

“Iss chhoti baat pe itna hungama karoge toh koi tumse shaadi nahin karega,” a student quoted Kaur as saying.
