The Metro Rail blueprint is set to undergo yet another design change. Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) officials would be in the city on Thursday to discuss the tracks alignment and elevation plan with Commissioner Prashant Trivedi.
The revised drawings submitted by DMRC recently charted out an overhead path near Vidhan Bhawan and Hazratganj for the proposed rail system. “This is just not feasible. The idea got a thumbs-down not only from Chief Secretary AK Gupta, but also from Hazratganj traders. The tracks would have to be underground on these two locations,” said a senior government official.
The changes may look small and simple but incorporating them on the proposed 22.27-km North-South Corridor for Metro would be a challenging task for DMRC officials.
“The track span between Vidhan Bhawan and Hazratganj is too short. Experts would need to rework the entire N-S Corridor drawings to get the desired gradient for the entry and exit points of the underground tracks,” said an official.
The cost factor would be another constraint. An underground network would double the Rs. 200-crore-a-km price for an overhead track suggested by the DMRC in its project report.
The agency has pegged the total estimated cost of the project at Rs. 8,200 crore. Till now, the only underground locations outlined by the DMRC were near Charbagh, Gautam Buddh Marg, Aminabad, Pandey Ganj, City Railway Station, Medical Crossing and Nawabganj on the 10.94-km East-West Corridor.
“An assessment of underground services (like power, sewer, water, telephone and gas pipelines) that would be affected once work commences on the project is also to be made,” said the official. The Chief Secretary had made Commissioner Prashant Trivedi the nodal officer to coordinate and facilitate information gathering on these issues from various government departments and agencies. Initially slated for Monday, this meeting convened by the Commissioner was called off, as DMRC representatives could not make it to the city.
