An 18-year-old girl was raped on Sunday night in Amethi district while she was on her way home after receiving a laptop in a programme organised in neighbouring Faizabad district.

A police officer said 50 girls, all students of Ramchandra Shukla Smarak Inter College, Jamuari, in Shukulbazar area of Amethi district, went to Faizabad where they were to receive laptops from social welfare minister Awadesh Prasad in a programme at Dhanpata Maurya Mahila College in Rasulpur, Faizabad.

The minister was supposed to distribute the laptops at 2 pm, but he arrived late and the laptop distribution started at 7 pm. The programme continued till 10.30 pm and then the organizers told the girls to return home as no arrangement was made for their stay in Rasulpur.

The girls, who have arrived from Amethi in vehicles provided by their college management, were sent home in them, but no one from the college management or the organizers of the programme accompanied them.

The driver of the Bolero in which the victim was, dropped most of the girls in their village first. The victim, resident of Sathin village, was left alone. The driver stopped the Bolero at a deserted spot and raped her.

The driver later dumped the victim by the side of the road and fled. Later the girl reached home and narrated the horror to her parents, who filed a complaint with the police on Monday.

Dy SP, Musafirkhana, Vipul Srivastava said an FIR had been registered against the driver and the victim sent for medical examination.

The distraught parents of the girl said the minister and administration should have made arrangements for safe return of the girl after the programme was delayed.

HT tried to contact minister Awadesh Prasad but there was no comment from his office.
