In yet another move to make the city safer for the fair sex, a devoted squad of women cops has been constituted to curb incidents of eve teasing, molestation and sexual exploitation at public places and outside girls’ colleges.

This centralised squad would conduct surprise raids at certain places and try to solve problems after taking feedback from women and girls present there.

“The squad has been constituted to curb crime against women that is increasing and often goes unreported,” said J Ravinder Goud, senior superintendent of police (SSP).

To be led by a woman inspector, the squad including four women constables would start work from next week.

The SSP said the team has been provided a jeep to move around the city and conduct raids. Circle officer Qaiserbagh Hridesh Katheria has been made nodal officer of the squad, he added.

Goud said, “Women face staring and lewd remarks while commuting and at public places. Keeping all this in mind, the police had planned this squad.”

He said some of the spots that are prone to such type of crimes are around girls’ colleges, bus stops, tempo stands, paan shops, liquor shops.

He said these points would be on the squad’s radar. Besides the city buses, tempo and autos would also be under watch, he emphasised.

Goud said the nodal officer would do weekly reviews of the squad’s work and guide to them work effectively to curb crime against women.

The squad would maintain a proper register and mention details of each and every visit, he said.

He said the women’s feedback collected from different places is very crucial.

“Further deployment of police would be done if the nodal officer feels so after assessing the feedback of any particular area,” said the SSP.

He said the squad is also given an open hand to initiate legal action against those involved in crime against women.

He said three more similar squads would be constituted soon.
