The image of Uttar Pradesh police took a severe beating after two constables thrashed each other in public view with their lathis (canes) on Wednesday.

What's more, both were on security duty at an entrepreneurs' conference attended by chief minister Akhilesh Yadav.

Head constable Mukund Chandra Yadav and constable Sunil Dixit of 10th battalion of the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC), Barabanki, bled copiously following their no-holds-barred clash at the Indira Gandhi Pratishthan in Lucknow.

The fight broke out on the road minutes after the conference ended. As stunned mediapersons, bystanders and police personnel watched, Yadav and Dixit swung their lathis fiercely at each other even as they took heavy blows. Both aimed their lathis at each other's heads.

The clash ended only after a PAC platoon commander managed to intervene and control them.

According to a preliminary version from police sources, the fight broke out after Yadav objected to Dixit being absent from his duty point during the CM's visit.

Dixit initially ignored Yadav, but attacked him after the conference ended. Yadav retaliated.

PAC deputy inspector general Bhola Nath Singh said an investigation was underway and action would be initiated on the basis of the findings.

DIG Navnit Sikera, in-charge of the CM's security, ordered the suspension of Yadav and Dixit. Both were admitted to the Ram Manohar Lohia hospital.
