A 22-year-old man was blinded and shot dead allegedly by the father and brother of his girlfriend when he went to meet her. The girl's father is a Bihar Police constable.

The alleged incident of "honour killing" occurred at Daulatpur villager under Gaurichak police station jurisdiction in Patna district late on Friday night.

"In a statement, the girl has blamed her father and brother for the murder," said deputy superintendent of police (sadar) Mustifique Ahmad on Sunday.

Abhay Singh and his son Joginder Kumar have been arrested for killing Rahul Kumar.

"A relative of the woman found Rahul entering her room late at night and informed other family members, who were awake as there was no power in the village," said a police officer, who did not want to be identified. They then dragged him out of the room, beat him up and damaged his eyes, added the officer. "One of them whipped out a pistol and fired five bullets at him. Rahul died on the spot," said the officer.

The post-mortem report showed that Rahul's eyes were damaged and he was shot several times from close range.

According to villagers in Daulatpur, it was well known that Rahul and the woman were having an affair. "Both of them had completed their studies and were planning to get married soon, but some of her relatives were against the match," said a source.

Ahmad said Rahul was supposed to leave for Haridwar on Saturday. "He had gone to meet his girlfriend before going on a pilgrimage," he added.
