A 46-year-old man in Meghalaya was made to eat dog excreta as punishment for allegedly practising witchcraft. Police arrested seven persons in this connection in a pre-dawn raid on Saturday and they have been remanded to five days police custody.
The incident took place on Tuesday at village Mawting Sohryngkham, 22km from state capital Shillong. Ten days ago, another man in a different village was forced to consume human excreta for a similar reason.
“Relatives of the victim Halorsing Kharumnuid lodged an FIR on Friday saying he was confined, assaulted and made to eat dog excreta by seven villagers on suspicion of invoking evil spirits,” M Kharkrang, East Khasi Hills district police chief, told HT from Shillong.
All seven accused are related to the victim.
“More often than not, property dispute coated with superstition is behind the branding of witches,” said additional director general of Assam Police Kuladhar Saikia. The top police official had launched Project Prahari nearly a decade ago to create awareness against witch-hunting.
