After killing his daughter in cold blood on Wednesday, Narender Barak alias Billu had a drink.

And a day later when he was arrested, he said him killing his daughter Nidhi and her lover Dharmender Barak “was a right step towards reforming the society”.

Childhood chums from the same village falling in love and wanting to marry is anathema in Rohtak and other parts of Haryana that don’t approve of marriage within same caste, as well as same community and even village.

So, when the fine arts student eloped with her co-villager pursuing ITI diploma in the same private college of the district, her family was enraged. Suspecting that a friend of the boy must know their whereabouts, they pressured him to give details.

An unsuspecting Ravi believed that Nidhi’s parents would only try to talk the couple out of marriage. But as soon as the family got to the duo at the Bahadurgarh bus stand — where they were waiting for Ravi to hand them some money to see them through in Delhi where they were headed — Narender,  a dog breeder, took charge and bundled both of them in a taxi and brought them home.

Soon, they were killed and Dharmender’s body packed in a sack and thrown outside his home where it was beheaded and the family issued a threat.

On Thursday, the boy’s family too had fled the village as had the others accused in the case.
