An unemployment drunkard in north Bihar raped his own nine-year-old daughter and almost got away with the monstrosity until outraged women of his village stepped in to hold him to account for it.

Enraged by alleged attempts of the men of the village to ‘hush up’ the matter, a group of women from the village found their own unique way to hand out ‘exemplary punishment’ to the accused, 32.

Relying on the victim’s harrowing tale of what happened, the women caught hold of the accused, tonsured him and shaved his eyebrows and moustache, before parading him with a garland of shoes hung round his neck.

The incestuous rape, official sources said, occurred at Bhangaha village under Bhangaha police station of north Bihar’s West Champaran district, on May 2.

But the public humiliation of the accused took place early Saturday, before the police got wind of the matter and descended on the village later in the day to record the victim’s statement.

Confirming the incident, west Champaran superintendent of police (SP) M Sunil Kumar Naik said no member of the victim’s family or any other villager had lodged a formal police complaint in the matter.

“But a case has been registered on the basis of the victim’s statement and raids are on to arrest the accused, who had gone into hiding since he was punished by his women co-villagers”, the SP told HT on Sunday.

Detailing the incident, an official said the accused forced himself upon the eldest of his three minor daughters on May 2, after his wife, upset after being thrashed by him, had left for her parents’ house in another village.

“She took with her only the youngest of their three daughters, 6. The accused took advantage of his eldest child after sending his second daughter to fetch something from the market”, the official said.

He said angry over alleged reluctance of male villagers to act against the accused, even after the victim had narrated her plight, the women of the village finally stepped in on Saturday to ‘suitably’ punish the accused.

“The accused is a drunkard who used to beat his wife on one pretext or another. After one such incident she had left for her mother’s house a few days before the rape took place”, said Narkatiagunj SDPO Sanjay Kumar.

Bhangaha SHO Pramod Kumar said on Sunday a medical test had been conducted on the victim but its report was awaited.
