A 35-year-old man allegedly abducted a minor Dalit girl posing as a Maoist and raped her repeatedly for 15 days in Odisha's Balangir district, before villagers rescued her on Monday.

Dharam Majhi, a widower, was arrested on Monday after villagers handed him over to the police.

"We have registered a case and sent the man and girl for medical examination," R Prakash, district superintendent of police, said. "Further investigations are on."

The police said Majhi abducted the girl from her house in a village under Khaprakhol block, around 450 km southwest of Bhubaneswar, on May 25 after terrorising her family by posing as a Maoist.

He then took her to a village in neighbouring Bargarh district and repeatedly raped her, the police said.

Accusing the local police of inaction, angry villagers said the girl's family had reported the matter to the police a day after Majhi abducted her. However, the police did not show any interest in tracing her, they alleged.

On Sunday, villagers caught Majhi when he came to a village in Khaprakhol and later rescued the girl.

The girl told the police that Majhi threatened to kill her entire family if she raised the alarm.

"As the local police had not done anything to trace our daughter even though we had lodged a complaint, Majhi was handed over to the Balangir superintendent of police after the villagers caught him," the girl's mother said.

The girl's family suspects that some influential people had hired Majhi to abduct their daughter to settle scores due to previous enmity.
