A married man was shot dead and his young second wife injured on Tuesday when her family members allegedly fired upon them because they did not approve of their relationship.

The wife, who was critically wounded, has been admitted to Meerut Medical College and Hospital. Her two brothers and three cousins have been named in the complaint filed by the family of the deceased, Shamsher. The accused are absconding.

The couple was returning to Chakpheri village when they were fired upon. “It appears to be a case of honour killing,” said IGP (Bareilly zone) Mukul Goel.

Shamsher, a father of four whose first wife lives in his village, fell in love with Feema and they eloped eight months ago. Shamsher then married Feema under a religious edict.

Second marriage?
