In the skirmish, the demonstrators set two police vehicles on fire. The Ukhrul demonstrations was part of the rallies organized by the United Naga Council demanding an honourable and acceptable settlement of the Naga issue and the demilitarisation of Ukhrul.

The district magistrate had imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC to avoid untoward incidents after a member of the Ukhrul Autonomous District Council was gunned down by unidentified men.
