After evading arrest for nine days, Sanaullah, the main accused in the alleged gang-rape and conversion of a madarsa teacher, was nabbed on Wednesday. Police have, however, denied the girl’s allegations of rape, forced conversion, abduction and confinement in a madarsa in Muzaffarnagar.

SSP Omkar Singh clarified that contrary to the girl’s recorded statement in the court, police investigation had found no evidence of the same. The girl had accused Sanaullah and Nawab Khan of raping her on June 29 when she had gone to Hapur.

Disapproving the charges, Singh claimed electronic and other evidence didn’t corroborate the charges. He said Sanaullah was admitted in Delhi’s LNJP hospital in the night of June 28 for heart treatment and discharged on July 2. The location of another accused was also traced to village Sarawa on June 29.

Regarding affidavit of conversion, he said that it was the only hard evidence available with police, which shows that all four accused named in the FIR are prima facie guilty of involvement in the act. He, however, clarified that conversion was still a matter of probe as it was a religious issue. Police also have booked Gul Sanawwar and Vakil Ahmad of Hapur district on charges of preparing affidavit of the girl`s conversion.

“They might have convinced her to prepare a conversion certificate to seek a job in a madarsa”, Singh speculated, adding “it is still a matter of further probe.”
