Mild to moderate tremors were felt across India on Wednesday night.

No tsunami warning was issued though. There was no report of loss of life and property, officials said.

Reports of jolts came in from places such as Ranchi, Kolkata, Gaya, Bhubaneshwar, Chennai and Vishakhapatnam. Even Delhi-NCR felt the tremors.

According to the United States Geological Survey, a 6.0-magnitude quake centred in the Bay of Bengal, around 275 km south-east of Paradip, Odisha, struck off the east coast around 9:50pm.

The government said the quake measured 5.6 on the Richter scale.

"The epicentre of the earthquake was in the Bay of Bengal with its coordinates being 18.1 degree north and 87.8 degree east, measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale," said ministry of earth science secretary Shailesh Nayak.

LS Rathore, director general of the India Meterological Department, said the quake struck 60 kms east of Paradip at a depth of 10 kms at 9.52pm.

"The magnitude of the earthquake was 6.0 on the Richter scale and its epicentre was in the Bay of Bengal," said an official of the meteorological unit.

According to the Hyderabad-based Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services, the magnitude of the quake was 5.8.

Due to the quake, mild tremors were experienced in the coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh, according to the Cyclone Warning Centre.

People in many Odisha cities including Cuttack and Bhubaneswar ran out of their houses and took shelter on the streets. The tremor was felt for five-10 seconds.

Odisha special relief commissioner PK Mohapatra said no reports of any damage to property and casualty had been received so far. "There is no reason to fear."

In Chennai, people came out of their homes in areas like Adyar, Porur, Kodambakkam, Triplicane, T Nagar and Nungambakkam.

In Kolkata too, people came out on the streets in panic.  There was, however, no news of casualties or damage.

The tremors were felt around 9.53 pm across the metropolis and south Bengal districts such as East Midnapore, Bankura, Hooghly, Burdwan, Murshidabad, Howrah, West Midnapore, North 24 Parganas and South 24 Parganas districts.
