Militants killed a Border Security Force constable and injured another in an ambush on the Srinagar-Baramulla highway on Thursday, eight days after a suicide attack on a Central Reserve Police Force camp along the same road stretch.

Around 7.30am, militants opened fire on a BSF vehicle near Methain on the outskirts of Srinagar city and injured constables Krishen Kalita and Hem Singh of the 8th Battalion. Kalita succumbed to injuries in hospital.

The police suspect the attackers managed to flee before a security cordon was thrown around the area. Both Hizbul Mujahideen and the Jamait-ul-Mujahideen claimed responsibility for the attack in calls to a local news agency.

With the ambush, and the killing of five CRPF troopers in the attack on their camp at Bemina — 5 km from Methain — on March 13, militants have sent out signals of resurfacing around Srinagar city, declared a zero-militancy zone for the last two years. What’s more, both attacks have occurred along the highway that army convoys use every day.
