In the second major attack in last two months, militants killed four police personnel in Kashmir’s Sopore area, 55 km north of Srinagar, on Friday afternoon and reportedly snatched their weapons.
Preliminary reports suggest militants had laid an ambush near Hygam area, some 12 km away from Sopore town.
A police party on its way to Peer Mohalla village disembarked near Hygam around 5:30 pm when unidentified militants opened fire and killed all the four policemen.
Srinagar-based zonal headquarters’ spokesman identified the slain cops as head constable Abdul Rahim, constable Mudasir and two special police officers Gulshan Ahmad and Mudasir Ahmad.
A heavy contingent of police and CRPF has been rushed to the spot and a combing operation is on to nab the militants, who fled from the spot.
Senior police officers refused to divulge details saying “investigations are on”. No militant outfit has claimed responsibility for the attack.
