A 22-year-old youth was killed by militants in Kashmir's Baramulla district on Tuesday, police said.

According to police, two militants, wielding AK-47 rifles, barged into a house in Cherihar forest area village in Sopore around 11pm on Tuesday and opened fire at Mohammad Iqbal Khan from point blank range.

"Some unidentified gunmen shot Mohammad Iqbal Khan, son of Ghulam Mohammad, a resident of Kawool Chairhar, Sopore, in the jurisdiction of police station, Bomai. The Sopore police have registered a case and started an investigation," said a police spokesman.

"The youth died on the spot after two militants with AK-47 rifles barged into his house and fired at him indiscriminately from point blank range," he said.

A first-information report (FIR) has been registered in the incident at Bomai police station in Sopore police district and investigations have been started, the police officer said.

It is not clear whether the slain youth was affiliated with any political party or guerrilla outfit, the police said.
