Now, in addition to the people, ministries too will have to come up with ideas on what the alternative institution to the 64-year-old planning commission should be.

A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi threw open a public debate to suggest the alternative shape of the panel, a missive from the PMO has been sent to different ministries asking for their suggestions on the same.

According to an official source, “The Prime Minister wants ministries to brainstorm and clearly spell out what they expect from the new institution and also how they want the new entity to shape up.”

Another official pointed out that since the ministries will have to deal with the new institution too, their inputs are also vital.

The PM has already given broad contours of the new institution.

“We envision the proposed Institution as one that caters to the aspirations of 21st century India & strengthens participation of the States,” Modi tweeted on Monday.

An official pointed out that as the PM puts a premium on out-of-the-box ideas, he is seeking such suggestions from all possible quarters before he finalizes his plan.

The PM’s missive to ministries to brainstorm also comes after several experts questioned the utility of scrapping the planning commission that steers the 5-year plans of the country.
