Minor among two arrested in Rampur molestation case
The man who shot the video of two women being molested was arrested in a raid on Sunday night.
The Uttar Pradesh Police on Sunday arrested a minor and the man who allegedly filmed two women being molested by a group of men in a sexual harassment case that has raised questions over women safety.
Police also managed to trace the two women, who were to undergo a medical examination on Monday.
“Our teams have arrested one Saddam Khan and a minor in a raid last night. Saddam is the one who shot the video on his phone and circulated it,” Rampur superintendent of police Vipin Tada said on Monday.
With the arrests, police have nabbed three of the 14 accused who allegedly harassed and molested the women in Tanda district’s Rampur town.
The main accused, Shahnawaz Qadri, was arrested on Saturday night, hours after the video was widely shared online.
The three-minute footage shows the men surrounding the women and groping them on a roadside near a poplar plantation. The men pull one of the women and pick her up, as the other woman tries to save her.
The date of the incident is not known but police hope to get more details now that they have tracked the victims.
“After the medical, we will present them in front of a magistrate to record their statements,” the SP said.
Four police teams are looking for the remaining accused.
The BJP, which stormed to power in the state in March, had promised to improve the law and order situation and ensure women safety.
Within days of taking over as the chief minister, Yogi Adityanath ordered “anti-Romeo” squads to check harassment but it ran into trouble over moral policing. The government renamed the force Nari Suraksha Bal (women’s protection force) and issued guidelines for them.
