A police spokesperson said the man enticed the little girl with sweets and other eatables and sexually assaulted her several times since November last.

“He was arrested after the victim’s parents lodged a complaint at the local police station,” the spokesperson said. “We sent him to jail in Champhai (headquarters of Champhai district) on Monday.”

The victim’s parents grew suspicious after the girl complained of pain and felt scared whenever she came across Zairemthanga.

The Khawjawl police had on December 5 last arrested one Lalhunliana, 40, on charges of raping a 5-year-old girl. The case was one of at least a dozen cases of rape of minors in 2010.

According to a nationwide survey last year, Mizoram ranks second in child abuse cases, next only to adjoining Assam. This was revealed by officials of Mizoram’s Council for Child Welfare.
