The police has arrested a tribal woman, who had tried to get rid of her newborn baby girl after delivery by throwing it in a field at Dongargaon village.
The matter comes at a time when the district is organising 'Beti Bachao Andolan' week.
According to police, Seeta Bai has been arrested under IPC 317 on Friday evening. She has been referred to district hospital for medical examination.
Seeta, in her statement before the police, said she had an illicit relationship with her relative after she was left by her husband four years ago. She underwent labour on Thursday night and went to her father's field and delivered a baby girl and used a blade to cut the umbilical cord. She then threw the baby in the same field and came back to her house and slept.
In the morning, villagers heard cry of the baby and took her to civil hospital at Sendhwa, 15 km from the village.
"The 3-kg baby was found quite healthy but we decided to admit her in district hospital, Barwani for the sake of her life," said Dr JP Pandit, block medical officer of Sendhwa. The civil hospital authorities reported the matter to police. Police booked a case against unknown woman and started to search the mother by going in the village.
In between, guilt-conscious gripped Seeta rushed to civil hospital Sendhwa where she came to know that the baby was shifted to Barwani. She then surrendered to police and in repentance asked them to give her child back.
She told to media that her lover refused to accept the girl child and so, in frustration, she threw the baby in the field.
