A man axed his wife’s right leg from the knee down after suspecting her of infidelity, kept her locked inside their home for two days, treated her wound with home remedies, and used the severed limb as a pillow.

The shocking crime happened at Udaipura village in Madhya Pradesh’s Damoh district on Tuesday evening, after Harprasad, a 27-year-old tribal farmer, had an argument with wife Anita whom he accused of having an extra-marital affair.

The 22-year-old wife threatened to leave the house when the husband kept shouting at her.

Incensed by her threat, Harprasad chopped off her leg to prevent her from running away.

Then he locked her inside the house, tied a tourniquet above the wound to stop the bleeding, and treated her with a paste of lime and turmeric.

In the meantime, he wrapped the detached leg in a piece of cloth, kept it on the bed and used it as his head rest, police officer AK Nimama said on Friday.

Harprasad did not take her to a hospital fearing that his crime would be exposed.

As the couple lives alone and doesn’t have children, he managed to keep his crime a secret, for some time at least.

But Harprasad’s father, who lives nearby, got suspicious as he hasn’t seen his daughter-in-law for a couple of days. He informed police.

Police found Anita lying on a bed and a putrid smell coming out of the severed leg.

The young woman was shifted to Damoh district hospital.

A policeman said Anita’s condition was critical because of blood loss, and an infection has set in on the exposed wound. “Now she appears to be better.”

Anita will have to live without her right leg.

“Joining the chopped leg surgically is out of question. She would have got gangrene had the wound been kept untreated for some more time,” a doctor said.

Harprasad has been arrested and charged with attempt to murder, which attracts a maximum punishment of 10 years in jail and a fine.

He told police he attacked Anita in a fit of rage, and panicked after realising the enormity of his crime.
