A teenaged girl, who had set herself on fire after she was sexually harassed by two men in Vidisha, 55km from Madhya Pradesh capital Bhopal, succumbed to burns at a hospital in Bhopal on Sunday.
The family of the 17-year-old girl had earlier complained to the police about the sexual harassment by Rishi Jalori and Raju Naik.
Ever since, the accused were allegedly putting pressure on the girl’s family to withdraw the complaint. The two men had harassed the Class 10 student again on Saturday.
Exasperated, the teenager set herself ablaze.
She suffered critical burns and was admitted to a hospital in Vidisha. Later she was rushed to Hamidia Hospital in Bhopal. On Sunday morning, she died.
The girl’s family members have alleged that Naik, along with a policeman, Gore Lal, had stopped the girl when she was out on Friday, and threatened to take her brother into custody and torture him if she didn’t withdraw her complaint.
She was given other threats as well. Later the girl returned home and set herself ablaze. The accused have been booked for abetment of suicide.
Naik has been arrested while hunt is on for Jalori, who owns a petrol pump in Vidisha. Lal has been suspended.
This is the second such incident in the last three days of a teenaged girl setting herself afire in the state due to sexual harassment. The earlier incident happened at Nasrullahganj in Sehore on Thursday.
The girl is undergoing treatment at a hospital in Bhopal, where her condition remains critical, said doctors.
