Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi is likely to be appointed India’s 14th attorney general. The official announcement on who will fill the constitutional post, which has been lying vacant due to lack of official notification on it, is still awaited.

The office of attorney general fell vacant after GE Vahanvati resigned last month after the election results. Though Rohatgi had given his consent to becoming the AG, the order appointing him has not yet been issued, sources said.

Meanwhile, on June 7, the law ministry appointed six of its law officers to the Supreme Court including senior advocate Ranjit Kumar as the solicitor general, the second most important law officer in the country.

The attorney general is an interface for the government to deal with the judiciary. And with UPA 2 government failing to defend their executive decisions and policies before the Supreme Court Modi would ensure that his top law officer doesn’t fail the government.

Rohatgi, son of former Delhi high court judge justice Awadh Behari Rohatgi, has represented Gujarat government in the Supreme Court in the 2002 Gujarat riots and fake encounter death cases, including the Best Bakery and Zahira Sheikh cases.

A sought-after corporate lawyer, he had represented Anil Ambani in the apex court in the gas dispute case between the Ambani brothers.

He has also been representing the Italian embassy in the apex court in a case relating to two Italian marines involved in killing two fishermen off the Kerala coast in 2012.
